Pride in Ageing

In March 2024 Transworld published the long-awaited tenth and final novel in Armistead Maupin’s beloved and enduring Tales of the City series. To mark the occasion, LGBT Foundation’s Pride in Ageing programme is bringing generations of LGBTQ+ readers together to discuss the first book in the Tales of the City series, at a one-off social and discussion space.

The first Tales of the City book, published in 1978, is an uproariously moving novel and an indelible portrait of cultural change from the seventies. Named as one of the BBC’s 100 Most Inspiring Novels, a PBS Great American Read Top 100 Pick and Britain’s favourite gay/lesbian novel from The Big Gay Read. Tales of the City has also been adapted for screen a number of times, appearing on both Channel 4 and more recently on Netflix.

This event is open to anyone aged 18+. To be part of this session, please book a ticket via the eventbrite page here and read the book before the event. Please note: There are two kinds of ticket – one with a free copy of the book (limited copies available – you will recieve a follow up email after booking when your book is ready to collect from LGBT Foundation’s Community Hub at Fairbairn House), and one for those who already have the book or will be buying a copy elsewhere. Tales of the City is widely available from local booksellers and libraries as a paperback and online as an ebook or audiobook.

This event has been produced by the Pride in Ageing programme at LGBT Foundation, with thanks to TransWorld for supplying copies of the book. If you have any questions about accessing this event please contact prideinageing@lgbt.foundation.
