Commenting on the outcome of the postal survey in Australia which saw a resounding yes vote in support of same-sex marriage, Paul Martin OBE, Chief Executive of LGBT Foundation said:
“This is a great day for the people of Australia and we join them in their celebrations. Australia is now the second country in the world where people have come out in huge numbers to vote for equal marriage. The outcome was clear, decisive, and overwhelming. It sends out a beautiful message that love triumphs, hope conquers, and equality wins.
Of course, as was the case in Ireland, there was no need to hold a vote on equal marriage - this was an unwanted and unnecessary poll forced on the Australian people by those who don’t want to see a fair and equal world. But those who sought to stifle progress were defeated by the wonderful people of Australia.
The Australian government must now move quickly to ensure the will of the people is acted upon and that Australia joins the growing list of countries where people have the freedom to marry the person they love.”
