LGBT Foundation is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative to help fund its life-saving LGBT domestic abuse service in Manchester.

The community funding scheme delivered in partnership with Groundwork UK sees grants of up to £8000 raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores awarded to local community projects.

LGBT Foundation’s Domestic abuse service has been selected as one of three groups in Manchester and Salford shortlisted to receive the cash award. Shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. Voting is open throughout July and August. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

LGBT Foundation’s service provides life-changing support to vulnerable LGBT people and families fleeing domestic abuse, who cannot access mainstream support services and have nowhere else to turn.

Commenting on being shortlisted, Debra Nixon from LGBT Foundation said:

“We’re delighted to have been shortlisted as one of the three groups to receive support from Tesco Bags of Help during July and August.

“The project provides essential support and a pathway to safety for vulnerable lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people fleeing situations of domestic abuse. Domestic violence and abuse in the LGBT community is at least equal to heterosexual relationships and research has demonstrated that domestic abuse services specifically tailored towards LGBT people are an essential lifeline.

“This money will go a long way to help us support vulnerable LGBT people to rebuild their lives and live free from fear of abuse. We hope the local community will add their vote each time they shop at their Tesco store to help support our life changing service.”

Voting starts from 1 July and can people can vote at the following Tesco stores:

Tesco Express – Church St / City Towers - Piccadilly/ Deansgate /Bailey St/Oxford Road/Princess St/ Quay St

Tesco Metro in Market St

Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £43 million to more than 10,000 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.
