Gay Bodies Worldwide

Gay Bodies Worldwide is a research study about the body image and body preferences of gay and bisexual men by Dr Scott Griffiths, a researcher in the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences. Starting on 15 February 2019, approximately 3.5 million smartphone advertisements were sent out to Grindr users in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The study is now the largest longitudinal study of gay and bisexual men in the world with over 8,500 people. In Australia, the study has received nationwide media coverage and strong support from the community. To make the study as representative as possible, the survey is now being opened up so that everyone can have their say, not just Grindr users.
Researchers from the project say that findings from Gay Bodies Worldwide will help them to develop the cutting-edge treatments that gay and bisexual men deserve. This TED talk gives an idea of some of the work they do, and why they are doing it.
Study participants will be surveyed 10 times over 5 years, providing insight into how gay and bisexual mens' thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about physical appearance change as they grow older. Researchers say that findings from Gay Bodies Worldwide will "transform our understanding of physical appearance phenomena among gay and bisexual men, and will help us develop new treatments for life-threatening body image and eating disorders."
