Church Lane Dental Practice in Moston have achieved a Silver Pride in Practice award for delivering LGBT inclusive care to their patients.

Pride in Practice is a quality assurance and support service for dentistry, pharmacy, optometry and general practice that strengthens service’s relationships with their lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) patients. Pride in Practice is funded by NHS England and Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership and delivered by LGBT Foundation, a national charity delivering a wide range of services to LGBT communities.

The whole staff team took part in LGBT awareness training and the practice made a few small changes that make a big difference to LGBT patients, such as putting up posters and increasing visibility in the waiting area, increasing their confidence when talking about sexual orientation and gender, and learning about services for LGBT patients who want support around drug and alcohol use.

100% of the staff who took part said they felt more informed, more confident and would recommend the training, saying that it was ‘well worth doing’, ‘well delivered’, and full of ‘interesting and useful information’.

Dentist Elaine Hawthorn said, ‘Laurence was engaging and friendly and led an open conversation which gave us insight and the confidence to ensure that anyone attending Church Lane Dental practice will be fully accepted and treated with respect.’

Laurence Webb, Pride in Practice Manager, said ‘The practice showed fantastic leadership, asking detailed questions about LGBT health inequalities and how to support patients. A well-deserved award!’

Pride in Practice is funded for all primary care services in Greater Manchester. For more information or to book training, email [email protected]oundation or call 0345 3 30 30 30.
