At the LGBT Foundation, we want everyone to enjoy themselves safely. Whether you’re hitting the dance floor or just having a good time with friends, it’s important to keep your health and well-being in mind. Here’s our guide to partying smart and making sure you have a great night while looking out for yourself and others.

  1. Stay Hydrated
Dancing the night away can be thirsty work, so remember to take regular breaks to cool down. Keep your energy up and your body happy by drinking plenty of water throughout the night. It’s a simple way to make sure you stay hydrated and feel your best.

  2. Know Your Limits with Alcohol
If you choose to drink, it’s important to know your limits and pace yourself. Drinking responsibly means you can enjoy the night without worrying about the aftermath. Your future self will thank you!

  3. Be Cautious with Drugs
If you decide to use drugs, it’s crucial to be informed and safe. Let a trusted friend know what you’re taking, and start with a small amount—you can never take less, so it’s better to be cautious. Make sure you’re with people you trust who can look out for you.

  4. Buddy System
Safety is always better in numbers. Stick with your squad and make sure everyone knows where to find each other if you get separated. Establishing a designated meeting point is a great way to stay connected and look out for one another throughout the night.

  5. Plan Your Transportation
Before heading out, think ahead about how you’re getting home. Whether it’s a designated driver, a ride-share, or public transport, ensure you have a safe and sober way to get home. It’s always better to plan ahead than to be stuck without a reliable option later.

  6. Trust Your Instincts
If something doesn’t feel right, trust your gut. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable or unsafe situation, don’t hesitate to remove yourself. Your safety is the most important thing, and there’s no harm in stepping away if something feels off.

  7. Look After Your Belongings
It’s easy to get caught up in the fun, but don’t forget to keep an eye on your personal belongings. Keep your phone in a front pocket, and if you’re carrying a bag, make sure it’s zipped up securely. Avoid putting your drink down unattended, and consider bringing a drink cover to help protect yourself from potential spiking. If you notice a friend is starting to feel unwell or disoriented, look for a wellbeing tent or security member to help.

  8. Keep Your Phone Charged
Make sure your phone is fully charged before you head out. If you’re using it to call a cab, share your location, or stay in contact with friends, having a charged phone is essential. Consider bringing a portable charger if you’re going out for an extended period.

  9. Know the Venue
Before heading out, familiarise yourself with the venue. Know where the exits are, where the toilets are located, and where you can find first aid or security staff if you need help. This way, if you need to leave quickly or get assistance, you’ll know exactly where to go.

  10. Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Stay alert to your surroundings, especially if you’re in a crowded or unfamiliar area. Keep an eye on the people around you and trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, seek help from a staff member or security personnel.

  11. Check-In with Your Friends
Before the night ends, make sure to check in with your friends to ensure everyone is safe. If someone has gone off on their own or isn’t feeling well, help them get to a safe space or make sure they get home safely.

  12. Set Boundaries and Respect Others’ Boundaries
Know your limits and be mindful of others’ boundaries. Consent is key—whether it’s in dancing, conversation, or any other interaction. Respect others’ personal space and check in with people to make sure they’re comfortable.

  13. Emergency Contacts
It’s always a good idea to share your plans with someone who isn’t attending the party. Let them know where you’re going, who you’re with, and when you plan to return. Having an emergency contact who’s aware of your whereabouts can provide an extra layer of security.

  14. Have a Backup Plan
In case things don’t go as planned—whether it’s an argument with a friend or the venue doesn’t meet expectations—having a backup plan can make sure you’re prepared. It could be as simple as knowing where a safe, quiet space is, or having a few different ways to get home.

Remember, having fun doesn’t have to come at the expense of your safety. By following these simple steps, you can make sure you’re looking out for yourself and your friends, so everyone can enjoy the night safely. Party smart, stay safe, and have a great time!
