Ethical research: good practice for researching LGBT communities and issues

We are often asked to promote research studies into LGBT conmunities and issues. We are keen to promote such studies, as they will help to build the evidence base on LGBT needs and experiences.

All research studies should undergo strict ethical considerations to ensure that the research is conducted appropriately and with integrity. There are some special considerations when researching LGBT communities and issues.

We have developed this helpful guide to ethical research when researching LGBT communities and issues. The guide aims to aid researchers in identifying, understanding and resolving ethical issues at all stages of the research process, with added focus on how these issues might apply to work with LGBT communities. It draws on the ethical principles set out by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Framework for Research Ethics (2015), with additional information on how each principle might apply to LGBT research.
