LGBT Foundation unequivocally stands with Stonewall and the majority of the LGBTQ+ and HIV sectors and withdraws all of our support from the Safe To Be Me conference, being organised by the UK Government.

As a community-based rights organisation, our commitment has always been to uplift LGBTQ+ equality and marginalised voices. The Government’s plans to scrap so-called ‘conversion therapy’ practices were inexcusable. Their subsequent U-turn was an insulting attempt at compromise that excluded our trans, non-binary and gender-diverse community.

To be clear, our rights cannot be conditional on political convenience or expediency. The Government’s data clearly shows that trans people are much more likely to be abused with ‘conversion therapy’ than cisgender people, with an even higher risk for Black trans people and trans people of colour. Any ban that allows for this abuse to continue is unacceptable.

What harms even one of us, harms us all. There can be no LGB without the T.
