LGBT Foundation’s statement on recent comments made by Prime Minister Boris Johnson

The LGBT Foundation is astonished and condemns the comments made by Prime Minister Boris Johnson during yesterday's (23rd of March, 2022) Prime Minister’s Questions.

The Prime Minister said that the subject of gender requires sensitivity, love and tact. However, by saying “. . . when it comes to distinguishing between a man and a woman, that the basic facts of biology remain overwhelmingly important,” the Prime Minister legitimises harmful rhetoric that suggests trans and non-binary identities are simply a question of biology.

This is a linchpin view used by trans-exclusionary organisations and individuals to attack the rights of trans and non-binary people. It fuels the dispute that trans and non-binary rights cannot exist without harming the rights and protections given to other marginalised communities.

As Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s words matter. We need him to reaffirm his personal and party support for trans and non-binary people. We want reassurance from the Prime Minister that the Government will engage meaningfully with trans and non-binary inclusive organisations to safeguard the rights of LGBTQ+ people and communities.

We are calling on the Government to protect the most at-risk members of our community and demand that positive action happens immediately to ensure this.
