Waking Up From a Biblically Induced Coma

Publish Date: 29/08/2012

Peterson Toscano spent 17 years and over $30,000 attempting to change and suppress his gay orientation.

He endured treatments at the hands of ex-gay therapists in the US and UK, and in the end came out VERY gay.

You can hear his amazing story first hand in Liverpool next week as Toscano is appearing at Ullet Road Unitarian Church at 7pm on Wednesday 5 September.

Using humour, performance, grounded scholarship, and sensational character changes, Toscano unpacks well known and lesser known Bible stories. Discover people on the page you never knew existed and revist stories with a new twist that will surprise you.

And Toscano will talk about his experiences in the ex-gay movement, including two years at the notorious Love in Action anti-gay residential facility in Memphis, Tennessee, and LIFE Ministries in New York City.

Peterson Toscano is an American playwright, comic, and Bible scholar. He helped produce the new documentary film, "This is What Love in Action Looks Like." He has appeared in The Times, The Guardian, and The Church Times. His other works include, "Doin' Time in the Homo No Mo Halfway House," "Transfigurations--Transgressing Gender in the Bible," and "I Can See Sarah Palin from my Window!"

"Peterson Toscano's work combines astute readings of the Bible with great story-telling and comedy. He offers interpretations of the texts and insights that even experienced biblical scholars haven't seen before. When portrayed by Toscano, Bible stories and characters come to life with wit, sympathy, and humor." Dale Martin, PhD, Woolsey Professor of Religious Studies, Yale University. Author of Sex and the Single Savior and Pedagogy of the Bible.
