Publish Date: 18/11/2011

According to Trans Murder Monitoring (TMM) - a project coordinated by non-profit association Transgender Europe - in the first nine months of 2011, 116 transgender people were murdered globally.

Their research indicates there have been at least 681 reports of murders in 50 countries since 2008.

In the UK, The Independent reported last month that there has been an increase in trans hate crime; crimes against transgender people went up by 14 per cent during 2010.

This Sunday marks Transgender Day of Remembrance - it is an opportunity to raise awareness of trans discrimination and remember those we have lost.

The Manchester based Trans Resource and Empowerment Centre (TREC) are holding a special event this evening (Friday Nov 18th) for Transgender Day of Remembrance and to relaunch their TREC Community events.

Rev Sarah Jones is their keynote speaker between 7-9pm at the Lesbian & Gay Foundation, Manchester.

Also, the stars of the Channel 4 documentary My Transsexual Summer have been speaking out to Pink News about some of the challenges and transphobia they face in everyday life.
