Pride in Practice is a service provided by The Lesbian & Gay Foundation to GP practices to support improvements in health outcomes for their lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) patients, as well as strengthen their engagement with, and understanding of, that community.

Mauldeth Road Medical Centre is based in Fallowfield, the heart of Manchester’s student-land, and has been working with The Lesbian & Gay Foundation to ensure their practice is fully inclusive. They were presented with a ‘Pride in Practice’ Bronze award to publicly celebrate their dedication to delivering an excellent service to all patients.

Mauldeth Road Medical Centre, Practice Manager Cath Forrester comments;“We are committed to providing a fully inclusive service to all patients regardless of sexual orientation, disability, race, religion or belief, age, sex, gender re-assignment, marriage and civil partnership or pregnancy and maternity.”

She adds; “We recognise that it is important not to treat all patients the same, but recognise different patients’ have various needs and we are committed to delivering exceptional service to every single patient; and we are proud to display our award.”

Kathy McGuirk, GP Surgery Project Manager comments “Lesbian, gay and bisexual people face a range of health inequalities, so it’s really important that GP Practices ensure they are fully inclusive”.

She goes onto say; “Making small changes such as using the term ‘partner’ rather than ‘husband/wife’, can make a huge difference to a patient. It ensures they feel comfortable in talking about their healthcare issues – rather than being worried about having to ‘come-out’ to their Doctor”.

Pride in Practice works across the country to help GP Practices become more inclusive. All of South Manchester Clinical Commissioning Group have signed up, along with many other practices within Greater Manchester, as well as across the country as far as London and Cornwall.
