My Cancer Treatment - Julie's story

Cancer affects many lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people every year.  This could be a personal experience of a cancer diagnosis, or through a family member, friend or partner.  The Lesbian and Gay Foundation, on behalf of the National LGB&T Partnership, is working with Macmillan to facilitate a national LGB task force on Cancer and identify patient experience (we are hoping to explore issues that affect trans* patients in parallel).

Although there is currently no way to identify how specific services deal with their LGB&T patients, there are ways in which you as a patient, carer or loved one can find out more about the services available to you.  Stefenie Milosz, from My Cancer Treatment, tells us more.    

My Cancer Treatment supports the NHS patient agenda ‘No decision about me, without me’ by empowering patients with transparent information, detailing the quality of NHS cancer services provided at hospitals and community services in England.

Using the ‘Find Your Treatment’ tool on My Cancer Treatment, patients can find and compare the quality of cancer services.

This tool covers all of the common tumour types and some of the rarer cancers.  In three steps, search by location, cancer type and hospital, to access detailed reports which include:

  • How well the service compares to other teams in England, treating the same cancer type

  • If a serious concern or immediate risk to patient care or safety was identified

  • If the medical team has all relevant members

  • The percentage of patients seen within the waiting times standards, set by the Department of Health

  • Patient’s experience of care in the hospital

"A question that we patients and our carers often ask when faced with a cancer diagnosis is ‘where can I get the best treatment?

"Therefore My Cancer Treatment provides an overall summary of the service, providing transparent information that supports patients when deciding where to go for treatment or when seeking a second opinion."

My Cancer Treatment is brought to you by the National Peer Review Programme, an NHS programme that has assessed cancer services nationally since 2001.  The National Peer Review Programme is now working with Macmillan Cancer Support, to ensure My Cancer Treatment is accessible, easy to use and helpful for people affected by cancer.
