Fairfax Group Practice strikes GOLD!

Publish Date: 31/07/2014

Fairfax Group Practice receives GOLD Pride in Practice award for delivering fully inclusive healthcare services to their patients.

Pride in Practice, delivered by The Lesbian & Gay Foundation, is a quality assurance support service that strengthens and develops a GP Practice’s relationship with their lesbian, gay and bisexual patients. Click here for more information.

The National GP Survey 2013 found that lesbian, gay and bisexual people were twice as likely as heterosexual people to say they have no trust or confidence in their GP. In Greater Manchester The LGF hears many reports from lesbian, gay and bisexual about negative experiences with healthcare providers. Pride in Practice works with lesbian, gay and bisexual communities and with GP Practices, to try and improve the situation.

Dr Luke Wookey, GP Partner of Fairfax Group Practice, said: “We know the importance of having an open, honest and trusting relationship with your GP is important for everyone, and we strive to deliver excellent and personalised care to every single patient.”

Pride in Practice and the Fairfax Group Practice have worked in partnership over the past year. Fairfax Group Practice approached Pride in Practice with commitment and energy, taking on training, resources and research projects.

Dr Luke Wookey added “Achieving the GOLD award, means that for lesbian, gay and bisexual people who have had negative experiences of health care before, can be confident that at Fairfax Group Practice, they will be treated with respect and as an individual, like every other patient. We want to make it clear that everyone regardless of sexual orientation, race, faith or anything else - all patients will receive excellent treatment here.”

Paul Martin OBE, Chief Executive of The Lesbian & Gay Foundation, said: “Fairfax Group Practice is an exemplary GP Practice, which wants all of their patients to feel welcome and trusting of all of their staff. This includes their lesbian, gay and bisexual patients who often experience health inequalities and can receive poorer access to NHS services. It was a pleasure to present their Pride in Practice GOLD Award today.”
