Celebrating our Volunteers

Publish Date: 23/05/2012

National Volunteer’s Week launches today (1st June) and the LGF are taking the opportunity to thank our valued existing volunteers and are calling for more people to join our Village Angels scheme.

The LGF are currently have over 150 volunteers and are on the lookout for people to take part in the new Village Angels community safety project. This involves doing outreach once a month on a Friday/Saturday night between 8pm and 2am and promoting safety to the LGB&T community.

Volunteers have contributed over 8,000 hours in the last year, completed runs for us raising over £8,000 in the past year and have helped us to continue delivering services from support groups, to face to face counselling and to our telephone helpline.

Joanne joined us in 2010. She most enjoys working on the help lines and said: “I get a great deal of satisfaction from this”. She explains that at the LGF “you are guaranteed a warm welcome, a great atmosphere and an immense feeling of satisfaction after every shift”.

Volunteers’ Week is an annual event which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK from the 1st - 7th June.

To celebrate Volunteers week and the achievements of the LGF volunteers an awards ceremony will be held on the 31st of May. The LGF will be giving out awards to volunteers who have gone that extra mile as well as giving out a very special award to the volunteer of the year.

Claire Baldwin, LGF Volunteer Manager said: “We have just found out we’ve been reaccredited with the Investing in Volunteer Chartermark which is valid for the next three years, which shows our continued investment and enthusiasm for our volunteers”.

We asked our volunteer Joanne what she would say to people thinking about volunteering, and she said “Don’t think about it… DO IT!!!”.
