LGBT Foundation bids a fond farewell to Greater Manchester’s Police and Crime Commissioner
As people across the city region go to the polls to elect the regions first metro mayor, LGBT Foundation would like to say a heartfelt farewell and thank you to Tony Lloyd, Greater Manchester’s Interim Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner.
Throughout his career in public service, both as Manchester Central’s MP and later as the Police and Crime Commissioner, he has been a strong advocate of our work. His passion and commitment to supporting LGBT equality, has helped Greater Manchester become a leading light when it comes to tackling issues facing our community from hate crime to domestic violence, while his funding helped make the Village Angels a reality. Thanks to his ongoing support the Angels, in their pink high viz jackets, have become a firm feature of weekends in Canal Street, while his additional funding support has secured their future for at least the next 3 years. A key parting gesture of providing additional funding commitments to ensure community safety in the Village will also see the welcome return of the Village Haven. This safe space for people who need space to recover from the excesses of a night out is now set to return later this year, following its successful pilot.
Commenting on the impact Tony Lloyd’s work and support has made to the local LGBT Community, Paul Martin OBE, Chief Executive of LGBT Foundation, said:
“Tony has been a significant supporter and champion of LGBT equality for many, many years and I have been privileged to have worked with him and alongside him for my entire career. During his time as Police and Crime Commissioner he has been a consistent campaigner for community involvement and engagement and under his tenure as Interim Mayor he has reached out and ensured that the needs of all of Greater Manchester's diverse communities have been acknowledged and included. On behalf of all LGBT people in Greater Manchester thank you Tony for all of your support and I look forward to continuing to work with you in the future as both my mentor and my friend.”
