How important is it to have openly gay characters in TV drama?
As a viewer of Coronation Street - a show I’ve loved all my life - I’ve always thought there should be a character like Sean on the show.
I’m interested in doing things that haven’t been done before. I originally wrote a letter to Tony Ward (Producer) asking for the job, because I’m a punter as well. I watch television and hopefully have good tele-visual taste. Coronation Street is the gayest TV show in the world. There are plenty of Sean’s who live around that area too. We just haven’t seen them until now.
What’s so nice about playing Sean on the Street, is that he absolutely makes no apologies for who he is. Thank God for the British public! I was able to go on stage at the National Television Awards and say how important it was for a character like Sean to have a voice.
I’m so lucky to be able to play a character that I’ve had so much input into. The writers have been brilliant with Sean - they’ve just picked the character up and let him speak. There are writers that have been there for over 40 years that you’d think might have problems writing for a character like him, but all that’s gone out of the window. Sean is who he is and that’s why it’s been so interesting and so courageous. Here is a gay character living his life. This is totally refreshing and new.
I will be on the Street as long as they want me. I had no idea a few years ago I’d be here, and now I am. I love it.
